Mould on and around windows is one of the most common issues I am seeing in my client's homes, especially at the moment during the cooler months. It’s easy to overlook, until you spot those little black dots creeping along the edges of your window frames or sills, or the green spots appearing on your glass. Black mould in particular can release spores that trigger allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues, especially in young children and vulnerable adults.

But there is good news! With some small daily habits and simple tools, you can keep window mould at bay.

Why Does Window Mould Happen?

When warm, moist air inside your home meets cold window glass, it turns into condensation. This creates the perfect environment for mould to thrive. If left unchecked, that moisture seeps into timber, window seals, and sills causing mould to grow and even damaging your windows over time.

🧼 Daily Habits That Make a Big Difference

1. Wipe down your windows every morning: Use a towel, microfiber cloth, or window vacuum to dry off the glass and frame. Even if it’s just a quick once-over, this helps prevent moisture buildup that mould loves.

2. Keep the air moving: Don’t trap the moisture, open your curtains amd blonds every day! And crack open windows whenever you can, even if it is only open a few centimetres. Fresh air helps dry out damp areas and reduce humidity levels indoors.

3. Use your air conditioner’s “dry” mode: Many air conditioners have a dehumidify mode, usually shown with a raindrop symbol. This mode removes moisture from the air and is often more energy-efficient than full cooling.

🌬️ Tools That Help Fight Window Mould

💧Dehumidifiers

  • Electric dehumidifiers are ideal for problem areas like bedrooms or living rooms.

  • Small moisture absorbers (available from hardware stores, or even KMart) are perfect for fighting moisture in wardrobes or place them on your window sills.

🧼 Regular cleaning: Wipe down window frames and sills weekly with a gentle cleaner. Keeping them free of dust and grime helps stop mould spores from settling in.

🔁 Bonus: Winter-Specific Tips

  • Heavy curtains can trap moisture so consider opening them daily to allow air to circulate.

  • If windows fog up overnight, dry them before the sun warms them. Moisture + warmth = mould heaven.

  • Consider using a window vacuum if condensation is a daily issue, it makes the job quicker and more effective. A window vacuums are relatively affordable and easy to use.
